Solving the Riddle Behind SEO & Landing Page Conflict on one Domain

Organic SEO Optimization & PPC Paid Advertisement

Ambitious enterprises make separate pages for SEO and PPC advertisement. This is a logical step for online marketing using a mix of organic and paid  ads for traffic generation. A website's SEO page is configured and optimized for search, and it responds to targeted queries. While a landing page is configured to respond to a keyword placement that is not organic, but its presence is due to keyword bidding on the Ad platform.

Smaller enterprises of professionals lacking vast resources or teamwork do not create separate web pages for optimization and ad strategies they adopt. For small businesses, a web page is optimized for search engines and the same is used in PPC Ads. But this approach though essential for small businesses with limited resources often leads to an incongruency that can mar the impact of optimization and dilute the impact of PPC Ads on the page linked. The problem becomes a greater challenge whence SEO and PPC are used together  to enhance response from the respective platforms and achieve the marketing goals.

Most social media experts advise companies to use their resources on both organic and paid marketing strategies for one goal.   This practice is now followed by in-house teams and digital marketing agencies and the results have been fabulous.

PPC Pages are designed to be be minimal such that they solve the purpose of the specific advertisement goal. Moreover, they may contain elements that are not present on the SEO pages like contact details and internal links to name a few. Unfortunately, there always exists a conflict between the SEO Page and the Landing page as they reside on the same domain or the website. Often there is a tug of war between SEO Specialists and PPC experts over these pages.

As the page for PPC is not optimized for search, it can impact the SEO Campaign if not properly integrated into the link architecture. Due to thin content landing pages cannot attract organic traffic, and hence companies using a one-page approach need to be careful. As a matter of fact, in a one-page approach, it is difficult to integrate landing page factors, and hence it is better to optimize the page for search and use it for ad tweaking in minor changes. For advertisement purposes, besides CTA, extra graphics will have to be added and the title should be creative and align with the ad objectives. Remember in Google Ads a number of creative titles and meta descriptions may be used and they may not align with on-page content designed for search engine optimization.

PPC Page & SEO Page Conflict & How to Avoid?

It is very difficult to align elements for both objectives, and hence creating separate landing pages is the way out. In digital marketing, campaign teams do not want one page countering the other but the chances of this happening are much less as the page meant for Google Ads is not optimized. Moreover, the ad page may contain copied materials although this is not advisable since quality and relevance are key factors in Ads showing up at the top on the SERP. Secondly, the ad pages are not meant for search engines so most likely the conflict is automatically avoided.

Any way to avoid a possible conflict the following suggestions should be implemented.

  • Use the canonical tags to favor the page meant to attract organic traffic.
  • No index the Ad Page
  • Place Ad Pages on Sub Domains
For the SEO Agencies everywhere, these are real-time issues and should be tackled with alacrity.  Both SEO and PPC Ads are becoming approach specific and even if they are executed in conjunction on page factors should be tackled separately.

The Winning Metric Page Speed There is More to Core Web Vitals

User Experience & The Right Answer to the Query

The search engines have a difficult task at their hand their prime focus is on returning the best or most matching answer in response to a query. With many contenders for the top rank, it becomes difficult to rank and attract traffic. Thus regular check-up or Audit is imperative in times of mobile-first indexing.

Who is First on SERP?

Despite priority accorded to the best answer, the delivery matters too. One aspect is the downloading speed of the page that provides the most suitable answers to the query. Most of the negative metrics filter out the website before it could rank at the top in the SERP. But that very website, when it is providing the best answer to a given search term will certainly be called for. The battle on the SERP now hangs tight between the contenders if there are more than two sites with the right solution vying against each other. Thus positive page attributes matter.

How to optimize Page Download Speed?

Almost everything on board a website impacts the page download speed the extent of the impact may vary hence web developers or designers would follow Agile methodology as it is iterative. Unfortunately, web designing has become highly competitive all over the World and that has brought down the development cost that the agencies charge. This is not good!

In lieu of less money, most agencies carry out a quickfire design and development job.  Website owners are less literate about the elements on board and their quality. They get a functional website but are ignorant of its ranking capabilities on the search engine result pages. Even when used as a referral, the speed matters, no one whether on the browser or in an email message containing the URL likes a slow download. Irrespective of the nature of the web page it should load within 3 seconds or less. The user experience declines as the downloading time increase.  Some negative impacts may not slow the page but they are definitely responsible for a bad page experience.

Let's make a list of elements that impact negatively;

  • Heavy Images
  • Animated Videos
  • Heavy Infographics
  • Unstable Widgets
  • Pop-Ups
  • Intruders (Overlays)
  • Too many sever queries
  • Unused Scripts
  •  Outdated Hosting Solutions
  •  Inappropriate bandwidth
  • Absence  of server modules (Apache/Nginx
  • Not Subscribing to HTTPS secure site
  • Malicious codes, Malware, viruses, etc.
  • No Security Checks
  • On-Page interruptions
  • Unresponsive web page
  • Ill-designed link architecture
  • Unused WP Plug-Ins
  • Unused Scripts & Dead Codes
  • Too many server queries
For a slow page, the solutions to the problems are not difficult to execute but some irritants such as pop-ups, ads, dialog boxes, or interstitials, are more a matter of policy than that of the technology.

Google recommends the use of  web.dev page speed insight tool for a site audit as regards the download speed. Besides the diagnostic, the tool also provides recommendations as solutions to the anomalies regarding page performance. You should set your technical/developer team to work on those solutions.

https://pagespeed.web.dev/

The tool has been recently updated to accord a real-time page experience analysis on Chrome.
Another tool that I have used and recommend is:

https://gtmetrix.com/
Screen Shot Page Performance

Page Speed Modules when installed optimize your website and are highly recommended they are open source.

https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/module

Website owners should focus on core web vital performance reports and implement the solutions. As mentioned above website security and hosting play an important role. Good hosting solutions should be implementing state-of-the-art technology not only as regards the server, it should also provide security with any outages. Web site owners are least aware of the implication of a poor hosting solution. It is up to web designers to select advanced hosting solutions. This decision should be based not only for search engine optimization, but the website designers also should educate the owners about the trouble-free page experience that their visitors will get.

A secure hosting environment will prevent hacking and virus attacks, these attacks that could lead to a penalty.  Encryption of data during transmission provides additional security and this is possible while using SSL or Secure Socket Layer provided by the host. The s you see in form of HTTP is a sign of a site using SSL.

Hosting Server Location

I always suggest that web designers recommend CDN network as hosting solution. These are cloud-based and secure. They enhance speed by delivering the site to the browser from the nearest location.

Some of the most popular web hosts are:'
  • Go Daddy
  • HostGator
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • Bluehost
  • WPEngine
  • Amazon Web Services
Website owners should always host sites on the nearest servers based on the target location. This is a good search engine optimization practice as it prevents tine consuming server hops.

To the readers, it should be obvious how important the page download speed is for performance on the world wide web. Ask your web designers to implement solutions that will provide quick access and fast download for a better page experience for your clients.

Slow Page Download Solutions for Webmasters & Designers

Slow Download Page Speed Ramifications

I have on a number of occasions deserted the page offering solutions I had queried for. We human beings have a short attention span, and this is most visible on the SERPs when the page is slow to download. In the case of the Internet, speed matters whether we download a web page, an image or download video, or a pdf file.

Page Speed is dependent upon many elements or attributes that a web page comprises. Besides losing the visitors the page if not able to download within 3 seconds is bound to lose at least 50% of the visitors. This is a substantial loss and calls for a solution:

What to Do? Solutions for Slow Page Download

  • Replace Animated GIFs with HTML5 Videos

  • Serve Images in Next-Gen Format

  • Efficiently Code Images (Specify Height & Width)

  • Reduce Initial Server Response

  • Eliminate Render Blocking Images
Animated GIFS though are interactive and effective but slow down the page speed and require uninterrupted Internet connectivity. It is better to convert them to HTML 5 Videos or replace them entirely with videos. Remember images take up nearly 21% of a web page weight.

Unlike the next-gen image formats like PNG and JPG GIFs cannot be compressed (they accept only lossless compression) hence only a milli-second image can blow out to a size of many megabytes. Slow frame rates and bad color representations are other drawbacks.   Animation technology uses more storage and memory space. It uses more bandwidth.

*Lossy filter compression reduces quality and lossless filter compression requires rendering to the original on the webpage. Tools = Photoshop, FileOptimizer, or ImageOptim, Adobe Affinity.

HTML 5 Videos do not require plugins like Flash they can be effectively played on the browsers. HTML 5 Videos exhibit splendid colors, are light in weight, and offer a better experience to the visitors. 94% of video compression formats use MP4 Format. While OGG and WebM are not that popular. Autoplay and creating a loop is easy with <video> encoding in the case of HTML5.

The next-gen image formats are more popular these days, especially their compressed formats. But compress them only if they are very large and are visibly slow to download. While compression is required it may slightly mar the quality. Use Google WebM instead.

Always optimize images for a better UX Experience due to faster download. Small file size also saves on the bandwidth and the CPU Process from extra load.

The best image compression tools are Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo. For WordPress sites there are many plugins available for image optimizations examples:

  • Imagify Image Optimizer
  • ShortPixel Image Optimizer
  • Optimole
  • Optimus Image Optimizer
  • WP Smush
  • TinyPNG
  • ImageRecycle
Reduce Initial Server Response

Server Response time is that taken to download the result page after the client request is made on the browser. The faster is the response the better is the User Experience (UX).

For better server response do the following

  • Fast Web Hosting Service

  • Use CDN Content Delivery Network
  • (Close Target Audience)

  • Page Should Load within 3 Seconds
Good Server Response Time

  • 0-7.2 ms Blocking

  • 7.2 ms to 18.3 DNS Lookup

  • 25.5 ms to .7ms connecting

  • 26.6 ms sending to 111.8 ms Waiting

  • 138.4 ms to  0. ms receiving

  • 988.0 ms DOM Loading

  • 1.22s 1st Contentful

  • 1.22 1st Paint

  • 1.52 s onload

  • 2.02s fully loaded
Best Practice for Good Page Download Speed

  • Do Not Over Load WP Theme

  • Delete Unused Plugins, Deactivate others not in use to reduce CPU Usage

  • Use the latest PHP or the programming Language

  • Minify Scripts like External files, Java Scripts and

  • Configure Caching

  • Cache first–process later
*Remember Static Contents download fast while dynamic contents are slow to download.

Eliminate Render Blocking Images

Render blocking resources are always in the critical path when download is taking place. They are in the header section or above the fold.

Usually the resources are:

  • Image first to be downloaded

  • CSS Next to be downloaded

  • Java Script
Your visitors are staring at a blank while the loading is going on this is certainly going to frustrate the visitors to the website. Although there should be minimum executable files in the critical path  sometimes they are unavoidable hence:

  • Reduce files in the critical path i.e. above the fold.
  • Optimize the image without losing the quality
  • Link CSS to HTML.  <link rel="style.css" href=“style.css">
  • Combine all CSS Files into one and do not use the import method for the call.
  • Check How Java Script is loading Use Page Insight Tool
  • Insert Java Script at the bottom of the HTML away from the critical path
  • Use W3 Render Cache to remove render-blocking in WP.
These are some of the suggestions please take the help of tech experts to use some of the suggestions as a webmaster.  The best solution is to make a content-rich simple website with few attributes.

Image Optimization for Seo & Visual Search Using eCommerce Portals

Often neglected by web masters, image optimization is a key to website optimization. It has assumed greater significance after weight-age given to core web vitals by Google. Images play a major role in enhancing user experience which is vital for success online.

Though less complex and time consuming than the rest of optimization exercise it plays a major role in garnering traffic from SERPs. Visual search is growing by leaps and bound people search using photographs as lead in the image search section of  the browsers.

Billions of searches take place using them and the importance has increased with the proliferation of eCommerce sites in the cyber space. Optimizing photos on your website will enhance user experience, reduce poor performance as far as web vitals are concerned besides increasing conversion through enhanced engagement and higher ranking.

Website owners and some web developers add pictures as if to fulfill a formality. On the contrary this is a serious aspect of web development. Relevant images accord a greater meaning to the content and attract buyers in eCommerce sites.  Attention should be paid in sincerity to visual attributes of a web page and photos besides video are essential for a complete page experience.

Availing good pictures is a difficult task and often relevant free ones available on Internet are not up to the mark. Hence a professional approach should be in place to acquire the valuable visual attributes.  Buying them from stock photo sites is the best option for general images while a photographic stint using services of a professional lens men for topic specific images should be carried out.

Compression

After acquisition images should be compressed without using quality. Google Squoosh , Tinyjpeg and Adobe Photoshop have proved to be worth their salt as far as compression is concerned. The light images in latest formats enable swift downloads  on browsers and this is gauged by search engines as good for user experience and hence good for higher ranking. Adjustment should be made without compromising quality or resolution and Squoosh offers a preview that helps in minimizing the image to right size.

Once compressed pictures added to a page should be defined by their height and width, Whence dimensions are mentioned the photos load separately from contents mitigate bad experience if they load slowly.

URL Naming

A responsive URL structure performs very well on SERPs and keyword driven approach should be followed whence naming an image.  The name should explain what the image stands for clearly to the users and the search engines.

Alt Text

Adding Relevant alt text is very important and helps the search engines to understand content which is essential for indexing and ranking. This should used for keyword spamming rather used as description which also acts as screen reading tools for the visually impaired. Alt text should be contextual and exactly describe the image. They are automatically embedded in the HTML of the web page and are easy to add using a suitable editor.  Never use long sentences are use natural phrases to describe whenever possible.  Remember search engines calculate the incidence of a keyword on a web page and too many added artificially would be spamming.

More on image optimization

Storing images in  directory structure. Best is to create silos or specific directory to store images this will help create a topic specific identity which will help search engines as well.

Create an image sitemap and add it to the web pages.

Create structure data for images in a web page.

These techniques are of immense help in case of large portals especially eCommerce sites.

Save images in next gen formats for better performance.  There are many formats available for saving images but most suitable is JPEG. Newer versions of JEPG format are available as JEPG 2000 and JEPG XR. The next gen formats support multiple color formats as support for HDR Imagery which stands for high dynamic range imaging.

Finally test download speed on tools mentioned below

Core Web Vital Issues and Remedial Action

Some possible issues that could crop up related to web core vitals and the remedial action in brief.  Use performing tools such as lighthouse and web.dev

Eliminate Render-Blocking Resources

Render blocking resources are mostly static files in shape of java scripts, HTML, fonts, CSS all these are vital for page function but at times they are needlessly embedded and can lead to improper caching or indexing as well performance related page vitals. These should be eliminated without fail and alternate found in order to comply with search engine guidelines.

Some of these elements Can slow downloading as the browsers spend lot of time rendering them. Another solution in case a render blocking resource cannot be eliminated is to reduce it in size.

Keeping render blocking page as minimal would reduce page load time and make fast download a possibility. It is important to team up with a web developer who has designed the site in order take remedial action. Decreasing http requests by using minification or bundling these elements would also work well as far as web page downloading is concerned.

All elements placed in the <head> section act as render blocking so these should be removed. Some cam be placed instead in the <body> section down below everything else usually as last in</body>.

Read More about render blocking resources and solutions.

Server Response

Server response is how your web page responds to the query send by the browser using http which means hyper text transfer protocol which is the vital process used to render webpage in the answer to query. Response is generated whence a visitor click on your web page listed on SERP.

The feedback of response generated is available as response codes. You can judge your sites performance using these feedbacks.

You can check response code using the tool mentioned below.

https://httpstatus.io/

When a visitor click on your page in SERP the process  involves a hand shake between the visitors computer and the server where your web page is located. If everything works fine and the page download takes place you    should get 200 OK whence you test your page.

Find here server response codes for web developers.

Some issues like large improperly optimized images can be addressed by the web developer by using next gen formats and properly sizing them. Heavy images should be reduced using many tools available on the net and Microsoft's Picture Manager.

Image Optimization ; User Experience & Responsive Attribute

An Image on Web

Most important visual elements are images that adorn the web page, blog entry or forums and comments. The pictures act as extension of text or content. Another aspect of photo inclusion is the pleasing note that an image may carry. They can act as mood builders which will attract visitors and perhaps turn them into repeat visitors.  These attributes please and excite or put at rest our mental faculties. Take for example a tiger picture that is so well composed...it excites or a landscape picture with soul in it will put your mental faculties at rest.

Sun Rise

An image inclusion in a personal album differs from the exercise to include it in a website or a blog. While the photographs in personal album are included by insertion or by sticking, that in the web page is done using HTML or other coding language to embed it.

Image As Utility

On a web page pictures appeal, but they also act as addition or extension of the contextual text. The act of adding or including case of amateur web developers is at a nascent stage. Site owners web designers add them to their creation mostly to complete a formality ignoring the visual appeal or message that it could carry. Most of web development companies providing cheap design and development do not have the wherewithal and will to  add visuals using the criteria mentioned above. This also applies to content  creation in which image acts as compliment. Poorly written contents will mar the impact of the best images. Yes the relation with contents is reciprocal and semantic.

Image Optimization

When embedding image in a web page or blog make sure that the naming is SEO friendly and is compressed to write size using Image Compressing Tools like Squoosh or Adobe Photoshop. This is necessary to comply with the web core vitals and thus enhance user experience. Other tools that may be used are tinypng and Online Image Compressor

Tiger Photo

Do not forget to add a caption in order to further explain its inclusion. According dimensions to image on a web page is important. When  height and width are mention it helps hamper slow download, as the text downloads irrespective of the picture if the later is slow.

Naming is important and the keyword used should hold relevance with the contextual paragraphs and add to the topic concerned. For example on a hotel wen page alt="accommodation" works fine and so does alt="restaurant" but if you add alt=fashion model it may not be contextual. Hence adding images and optimizing them is not just a formality it has to be done with alacrity mind you...

It is necessary to check how the image affects download speed using the google download tool. Neglect in this aspect would lead to a bad user experience which serious website owners would not wish for.

Image  Search

Like voice search image search is very important and part of search engine optimization but most developers and web masters ignore it completely or take it in a lighter vein. Never proper image optimization can be a good visual content exercise and help in brand visibility as well as good means of referral if a link points to it.

If you plan to uses pictures as visual content campaign on Instagram or elsewhere do not forget to add hashtags which hold relevance to the topic.

Searching for Right Photos

Best option is to photograph relevant images yourself or hire a professional photographer who understand the subject matter very well. If this is not possible ask a friend photographer to donate. Else resort to free image resources online like "UnSplash" they can come up to expectations. If fund allow you can purchase the right image from stock photography sites like Shutterstock or Adobe.

Link Building : Consider User Experience

Though the framework of search engine optimization (SEO) retains the same skeleton as it did before, the search engines are looking deep into things. Everything connected with the website will come under the scrutiny. Although not a ranking factor the destination that a link leads will be under consideration sooner or later.

Hence honesty towards anchor text usage and the authority of the destination becomes important. Visitors do not wish to be led to dud pages or pages having weak content, are not mobile friendly and web core vitals are disappointing. But in all seriousness if  you lead the user using content and the anchor text to a page with in totality belies the truth and their expectation than that is spam of worst order. User should know if the target page is meant for advertisement of sorts, or an affiliate site or anything that does not hold promise. This can be worse than  bad results on the SERP.

The seo or webmaster building links using their skills either for higher ranking or for referral marketing should be dead honest. If not it could lead to loss of online reputation on production site as well on the social media networking site where the contents are being pushed.

Expectation is human nature, and web visitors are sensitive about time they spend to unearth information for facts and figures. They wish that their intent should be fulfilled in a short time without getting trapped in unrelated advertisements or  spam pages.

Webmaster with ill intent promoting site of client with equal ill intent will resort to these things for making a quick buck. But what they do not realize is the loss or reputation that takes place online. If you are promoting content wrapped links with ill intent you will lose repeat visitors and lose online reputation in time to come as well.

Good Webmasters

But the buck does not stop here, webmasters with good intent may get trapped in this racket. Honest clients with weak pages and no ill intent may not deliver the experience that the users wish for. Weak or irrelevant content, bad design which lacks aesthetics, irrelevant attributes and shaky web vitals are surely going to disappoint the visitors.

This is a futile exercise even though the intent is not dishonest. Since the search engines do not reward weak pages. It might be good idea to improve the pages first and then go in for a link building campaign. I know some clients are hesitant in making changes to their websites due to investment concerns or design changes or whatever. Reasoning and logic will play an important role in convincing for a complete change of content, attributes on page and aesthetic.
Reward: A well built web page will definitely be a successful one post the optimization campaign.

With day to day evolution webmaster should stick to SE guidelines and need/desire of their audience. Simple understanding of human behaviour and logical approach will lead to better results. This is where one's time should be spent rather than spending hours in trying to unravel the algorithms.

Getting Started AMP Pages

These pages are specially added in a website for mobile search they are not   rendered well in the desk top. It is quite apparent that the search engines are taking AMP development seriously. It will certainly boost ranking to some extent if AMP pages along with structured data is included in the link architecture wisely.

The AMP pages are actually duplicate pages that of the original but they include canonical instruction wherein the issue is resolved.

The Tag to be added to AMP Page

<link rel="canonical" href="https:///domainname/url/to/full/document.html">

The full form is Accelerated Mobile Pages, the pages are meant to deliver experience on the smart phones due to their ability to download faster. Certain features like images that would hardly be seen are sacrificed.

Web designers familiar with regular HTML should have no difficulty with AMP HTML which is in truth a subset of the former. Whence an Amp page is added to the website a discovery tag has to be added to the original version. It is also wise to add structured data to amp pages.

Discovery Tag to be Added to Non AMP Page or the original version.

<link rel="amphtml" href="https://domainname/url/to/amp/document.html">

AMP Plugin
Word Press Implementation

The AMP plugin for Wordpress is being developed and is available at GitHub. After installation you can append “/amp/” to the permalink or use “?amp=1” as the case maybe. The Amp plugin would also append rel=amphtml tag for easy validation.

Along with this also use chrome validation for the page. For validation go to the AMP page in Chrome and append “#development=1” to the end of the URL. Press Control + Shift + I to open Developer Tools and go to the Console. Press refresh for successful validation.

Also validate all the AMP pages and keep in mind to specify height and width for images besides any other changes that may be required.

Google Knowledge Panel

When you search for local information pertaining to people, business, restaurants, movies etc on the right/top side of the organic results you get a knowledge panel.

Knowledge Panel offers wide scale information on wide variety of topics as mentioned above.   The panel helps visitors get more information about the topic, person or and entity. Plus you also get as link the website and directions as to the way to reach, working hours and more. The panels are  local as well as global the latter with more information upon a wider search, closing hours, days and even reviews..

How you have optimised the My Business Page will reflect upon the Knowledge Panel. But the visibility of your business is also dependent upon distance, relevance to the search and may be some other factors.

Verifying your business in My Business Page is extremely important albeit this may not guarantee presence on the Knowledge Panel.  The MBP is also a place where in you can submit accurate information about your business which will incidentally also help in the presence in local search.

Title and Meta Tags - Onpage optimization

One of the major constitutents of on page optimization are the title and meta tags. There have been lot of assumptions as to the quantum of importance the search engines give to the above attributes. But this is uneccessary since these are vital elements and tell the search engines and users as to what the site is about.

How much importance these elements deliver as far as ranking are concerned depend upon overall factors. By implementing proper title tag and meta tags you are helping the site attain good position on SERPs on targeted search terms.

These tags do not deliver miraculous results, hence use them to inform the users and search engines about what content to should expect. The users read these tags and then decide to click on the site link hence write them very carefully.

The overall rankings come from comprehensive exercise and not by these tags alone. Building a good site is a key to success and seo is a process used for indexing and positioning the site please remember.

While implementing tags keep the character length of the title to a certain limit and do not stuff keywords. In later stages you can add the company name well. This will be a good brand building exercise. This applies to meta tags as well. Write decently keeping user in mind. Impress him for quick response and justify by what you deliver on the website.
