Internal Links for Website Optimization

 About Internal Links

Internal links are of two types text-based and image-based. Done properly, they are a major boost for optimizing a website and can influence ranking to a considerable extent. It also plays a major role in increasing the accessibility of web pages. However, like external linkings or inbound links, outbound links are contextual and could be subject to anchor text spam, so be careful.

This may all look simple, but internal linking becomes a complex issue in the case of major portals. The activity prioritizes content and builds the correct hierarchy in the link architecture. Usually, in a site with good architecture, all-important content or utility pages should be accessible with two or three clicks, four at the most.

These links could be placed within the content, in the sidebars, headers, and footer. They are instrumental in finding key content the user is looking for, especially in the case of very large websites which are often too complex to use.

If you successfully create a topic cluster and link to a pillar page, the results are far better. But it would be best if you strictly stuck to contextual relevance.

A Back Link in The Cyber Space: Use and Misuse

About External Linking

Every aspect of website on page and off page is user experience. We do not visit the cyber space to change our clothes; we dwell in the vast space for seconds, minutes and hours and in times of Covid 19 perhaps for days. The visits are based in our intent but they excite our sensory apparatus - this reasoning is without any doubt.  For most visitors the virtual word is not for an escape or a an addiction, it is like exploring an island an intent oriented approach.

Next Gen Evolution

Every given moment people wish to seek new discoveries and experiences. Perhaps static SERP with same keyword response again and again will become a negative experience devoid of thrill of discovering something new - an information panel that rotates may be the next gen evolution. This may happen in near future in order to make search results dynamic.

Backlinks Regulations & Metrics

When the search engines began to discover websites and blogs, they relied on links and associated search terms on board for ranking purpose. They still do.

Back links besides internal links are pathways of invaluable discovery. This experience has become better with  regulatory measures that have set in with the "nofollow" HTML instructions inserted within the code. This is to inform search engines to ignore the link or treat it partially for extracting information but no authority to be accorded. This has to be in place, for links are part of the cyber space which relies on networking and they serve other purpose as well. Even in excess, they provide access to information and may transform intent upon switch to the next page as well. They are excellent means of  creating referrals and saturate the web with website presence at the same time. They should never be misused.

Content Wrapped Links

Content wrapped links provide valuable information about the nature of the source as well as the forwarded page especially as regards the associated words. They also encourage content creation and enhance use of attributes like videos, inforgraphics and images. They are indispensable for search engines as well as the visitors. On many instances like in case of internal connect they encourage stay on the source besides making it more interesting or useful. This form of connect is between pages of a website or a portal with the aim of making the architecture and hence the user experience more fluid and rewarding.

Ranking Metrics

The search engines now include plethora of metrics in order to index and rank a web page or a blog entry. Unfortunately back links as a metric received a bad reputation whence the black hats started to manipulate the ranking algorithms on similar lines as they did with keywords on page and off page. But search engines follow and evolutionary paradigm and continue to create fences around them that takes care of spammers.

Links Are Evil

The perception has not changed especially in the mind of some editors who perceive every attribute that interconnects pages as spam or ill conceived. They are not to be blamed since the reputation garnered by the attribute has been blackened due earlier indiscriminate use in order to manipulate the ranking algorithms. Thankfully this has been taken care of, and one of the most active ingredient to keep the networked space alive has been given a life.

HTML Code

How a link is created manually using HTML code. See the example below:

<a href="URL">anchortext</a>.

<a href="URL" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">anchor text</a>

The coding is diverse done for various purpose. You can read more below:

Link Anatomy

Building quality or authoritative links is the essence of this networked space but is also important for search engine optimization or SEO. Webmasters use them in their campaign and if they are honest nothing like it. Those with editorial scrutiny become valuable for SEO and the ones naturally gained due to usefulness of the web page become more valued for ranking purpose.

Link building is for diverse reasons as explained above but the webmasters should pay attention to search engine guidelines and to other aspects of page quality as well. User experience (UX) is supreme and the page loses its content value if the experience is in the negative.

Although local listing is highly valuable avoid listing to SEO friendly directories until unless you can list the site in a niche. Forum and blog comment posting have been degraded almost to the level of "nofollow". But they may have some usefulness but this should not be for spam certainly. Even guest posting on blogs should use the "nofollow" attribute in the links.

Acknowledging Content Spam & Impact on Associated Links

Of Website Content

Content along with links especially on website are the most important element of cyber ecosystem. They are instrumental in reacting to search engine algorithms and provide crucial information (answer to query) to site visitors. In short write for the user...and further... bad contents will bring bad results and will be acknowledged as spam in quite a few instances.

This fact should be known to website owners who hire webmasters or agencies for promotion of their website or holistic digital marketing campaigns. Seo content writing differs from the regular stuff and SEs have blocked spam using high prevalence of keywords as a yardstick measuring goodness.

Thus malady afflicts those who pen website pages, blog posts and articles for search engines rather than the users. Boldly repeating contents on page or in another page in the website architecture is certainly not impressive and is boring. Search engines upon noticing the futility of repeat paragraph/page would downgrade the page...writing same thing in a subtly disguised manner would also harbor same action since the algorithms are being constantly enhanced to deal with dilution or spam. This would also lead to penalizing of internal pages linked with content with malicious intent. In case of doubt create a sub section under suitable heading or main link and add the new page there underneath. If repeated or similar content is present lower down the hierarchy it should be more acceptable?

Not only repeating in any form but also adding content not narrowly relevant to the topic can be seen as spam. this is done to increase website presence on far related topic. The link and content architecture of a website should be unique relevant and designed for the visitors.

Repeating kills creativity, for it is a mad rush to impress the search engine it thus drains energy to create a new vision using words that are clearly invigorating to the readers and explain things better. Yes people like flair in the pen provided it explains things in a lucid manner and is not abstract. Visitor need direct and simple answer to their query be it navigational, informative of transactional whatever the intent. The attention span of most visitors is limited and there is no time for unravelling intrigue or abstract.

More on Duplicate Contents

Creating New Pages

Whence you create a new page be careful even honest intention can be construed as malicious if it is to narrowly related to the existing. Sometimes it is necessary to create such pages in order to bolster the information architecture of the website as whole. Another unintentional spam is seen on eCommerce sites in case of product descriptions where remarkably similar description are used in case of items separated by dimensions or price.

Large portals are subject to repeat content which inadvertently creeps in especially in case where other writers dabble or have written in part. It is a mind boggling exercise which will lead to fatigue if scrutiny is made to extricate such malicious impact and most webmasters ignore if the fee paid is less and hence the time accorded or reasonable traffic is in place. But these site sooner or later will be beaten hollow by the peer on SERPs.

Earlier a large number of pages where created to attract attention to closely related search terms. This is spam and making them landing pages will not achieve any authority for the website. A unique write up using semantics will automatically focus on diverse  search terms. Those out of purview will not be closely related hence a new page can be created as sub division of the same topic without any fear of losing authority if not penal action. Topics or sub topics can be repeated on new pages in order to elaborate information but the phrase used as introductory on a parent page should not be used.

Search Engine Optimization Ethos

Search engine should avoid penalty in the optimization framework rather they should discount authority if malicious intent is found. Imposing penalty is regressive and conservative unless until it is a case of a direct threat that viciously manipulates the algorithms.

Website owners often fail to pay enough attention to on page contents because either they are not aware of ever changing dynamics of algorithms and the importance of on page content, or do not have enough budget to hire a seo writer which by all means come expensive. Search engine optimization is an art unlike its parent fold known as digital marketing and art costs money.

This is just an introduction to content spam more digging will be revelation in this series. Stay Hooked!

Of Organic Back Links - Content Creation & More

Organic Backlink are also known as Natural Links!

The natural back-linking occurs whence a website owner places the link of your website or blog on his own. This is external link for your property and apart from increasing your popularity it plays a role in increasing the domain authority or DA as well as enhances your ranking on SERPs on relevant search terms.

Why would person link your website/blog to his or her own?

This connect happens whence your website or blog is found useful for future reference, enhances or adds to the knowledge base of the linking property. There can be innumerable reasons for a site owner to link to yours.

In simple terms a widget for example a calculator is added to a site requiring frequent calculations. Similarly websites are linked for utility or information they provide.  This is the most popular and easiest way of value addition.

The external links in any form have a great potential to invite referrals and this could be a non organic way of getting a response from your websites. This connect may be natural as well as created but if the latter has undergone editorial scrutiny it holds immense value. But we do not know how search engines treat such links.

Creating Links

The presence on SERPs pays for you whence your property ranks on the first page on SERPs after that ranking things fizzle out as few visitors go that far down.

But linking is essential not only  for the fight on the SERPs for relevant terms but also for web popularity or web saturation. A large placement of your site links will have the potential to draw referrals. The latter is also known as referral acquisition and not as result of ranking. The click can take place on a social media platform or from a link placed on article or on another website.

Fear or Penalization & Referral Creation

All website owners strive hard to fight  out on the SERP since there is always a potential to rank on less competitive long tail search terms. At the same time they do not wish to lose the referral potential. This is a paradox that webmasters face while enhancing web saturation for referrals.

Hence potential for referrals has to be constantly enhanced but this has to be done the right way to avoid penalization. Spreading the links on contents on large number of quality article sites and on sites that offer users to create contents and link. Most of these sites have strict editorial scrutiny...for potential web saturation you post articles and create contents on "nofollow" sites. But here also spamming can be lethal since search engines do read and credit "nofollow" links as well nowadays. Most of the links on Social Media are "nofollow" but the exposure on this medium far out-ways the potential of a link or link juice as some writers call it.

Hence link building should also be within the rules just do not rush.

Directories, forum, blog comments are not worthy of the exercise anymore until unless you are dead sure of their authority and relevance regarding your site.  There are some good directories but only few. Best is to avoid this method of linking. Also use anchor text that a user would type to search your property use exact match terms with great care and bare minimum.

Contents The Greatest Pull

Yes website contents are a major draw as far as natural linking is concerned. The onsite or off page contents like the UGC do matter. Writing unique, informative and easy to read contents will always attract organic connect and if this is enhanced by attributes like videos, widgets, info-graphics and images nothing like it. Good formatting will assist readers and your write up will look smart.

Hence good content creation is not only for conversion it is also for attracting followers who link your website to theirs. Good content creation skill development is through practice and from reading tips and advice from experts. Hard work is the key remember! No short cut!

In search engine optimization content creation will always play a major role though technicalities are important as well. Always check mobile friendliness, down loading speed and usability factors.  Another important factors is relevancy in SEO...promote sites on terms the contents justify else you will end up with ineffective and useless workload.

Using Keywords in Search Engine Optimisation

Keywords - Content & Link Building

Keywords are compact group of words and phrases that impart information about a topic. They may be descriptive as well as deliver context about a topic, service or product. To some it up few words define a whole gamut of meaning.

Keywords find major use on the Internet on the websites and blogs and elsewhere. A medium where short text is read more than long text a keyword would inform the visitor on the SERP what it is all about rather than reading whole descriptive text. The keyword than would prompt the visitor to move on if that is what he or she is looking for on the Net.

Keywords also called search terms are central to any written text, domain a naked link and a short tweet.

When writing content the search term usage is bound by rules. Usually the first line should contain a search term and so should the last line. The headlines, title and description should contain the terms as well. But the rules intervene and do not allow repetition of terms beyond a certain limit. This may be a guideline of search engines but overall purpose is to create good contents - readily and interesting. Just imagine if you encounter the same word again and again in an article ...you will certainly be disgusted.

With the increasing popularity of LSI the content writing for visitors and the search engines has taken an interesting turn. Unlike before were keyword infested contents were tolerated the current change has made writeups more natural. Hence whence writing text you should do so naturally any forceful intrusion of text would be frowned upon and possibly lead to a penalty.

Keywords are most targeted by SEOs or webmasters in copy of website and blogs. The limitation applies to them as well. For external link building repetition of search terms surely leads to a penalty.

Therefore anchor text usage demands that you use primary or exact match terms in limitation and supplement it with long tail and partial match terms. Using brand name in anchors is again a good idea.

Remember the purpose of links is to add information and if done properly using an authoritative site you get lots of juice for ranking.

Keyword usage is part of content creation for marketing. The terms should arise after extensive research and the relevancy should not be in question. With passing of time webmasters realize the terms most used by visitors in search. Proper usage leads to readability and information which attract natural organic linking for better ranking.

Contextual Link - Inline Linking - Keywords

Contextual Link

A contextual link is placed on chosen words in the sentence usually surrounded by more content in article or blog entry or micro blogging entry etc. The chosen words are naturally occuring the keywords that highlight the link and offer information about the website or blog.

These connects carry greater weight whence surrounded by relevant search terms. Unlike links in the footer or sidebar they are rarely ignored by the visitors and are also valued highly by the search engines.   The is done during external or outbound links as well for internal linking in website for on page seo. The inner links are crucial part of architecture of a website and also carry some juice.

Note* I do not resort to inners if the web page contains links to footer or sidebar in order to avoid spam.

Contextual links are placed in order to provide further information which is unique and relevant. These whence placed in the body of the content blogentry/article/webpage also invite organic linking which is most respected by the search engines. Hence you have to create appealing contents with unique information which the visitors would like to visit again and again.

Inline Linking

Also known as hotlinking this is called a piggy back ride where in an external piece, image is connected back to the owners website or blog. As a matter of ethical practices the owners permission should sought before creating the inline connection. Albeit you are not destroying the copyright you are still using the other parties band width as well as may be presenting images in blurred form. The owners may not like their content/website displayed on yours for myriads of reasons.

Keywords : Anchor Text

Keywords are words and phrases associated with the contents and are relevant. They are part of the language as we process naturally and are compact source of relevant information. Whence embedded in a link they are termed as anchor text.

Code Example: Anchor text shown in red.

<a href="xyzabc.com">keywords</a>

Contextual links containing anchor texts are indispensable source of information to search engines. They index and rank websites based on these links plus a whole lot of metrix embedded deep in their algorithms. But misuse of keywords or anchors can lead to penalization.

All About External Link Building

Albeit many metrics are now included in ranking and indexing of website links stand out. They stand out as a decisive factor and as indicators of topic and niche. Though mass scale link building is no more the criteria of performance on the SERPs a large number of authoritative links do help.

Natural links are the best for any website and most liked by the search companies nevertheless a lot of hard work and ingenuity is required. The content creation with niche information, utilities, graphics and videos create an ambience for inviting linking. Easier said then done but all web masters should aim at achieving a large number of natural links.

Another good option is to create contents and add a link and then post it to an article site with editorial scrutiny. This is applicable to creating external links on all platforms that are authoritative with good reputation online.

The most important aspect of external link creation is relevancy. The external link should be embedded in content which is topic relevant. But while doing this posting should not be done at spam sites or farms which are built for this very purpose. In case of doubt add "nofollow" attribute to escape the wrath of the search engine. There are many "nofollow" sites where link can be embedded in a write up or article safely. But even here editors will not allow spamming. Hence create content which is unique all the time and post in these sites for building referrals.

When you embed a link do it in a sentence which contains relevant information, and is not more than a 100 characters.  Use logical linking practice in a suitable anchor but not manipulate the sentence to add a primary one. Large number of related anchors perfectly suitable to the content should be used.
A large list of relevant anchors used naturally help the algorithms determine on which keywords the side should rank. It is no longer to use one type of targeted anchor excessively. The indexing criteria has evolved much more and can decipher what the site is all about.

There are many platforms available for attractive content publication. These are manned by editors and strict editorial  scrutiny is maintained. This is the way to for search engine professionals now. These sites can offer quality linking but a lot of hard work is required in order to understand their criteria.

A blog is also a good option for link building but the write ups should be of serious nature. As applicable to all content creation topic relevancy is of utmost importance. Just do not create haphazard contents to as an option for linking. A large number of anecdotal and informative blog entries is the order of the day.

Hence numbers have no meaning if the activity is not executed rightly. Qualitative linking should be done in a campaign for search engine optimisation. Remember quality and not quantity counts. Have patients for results to come through.

Use the content creation to gain popularity of social networking websites, blog aggregates, online communities. The reputation you build up gradually will offer long term stability high position to your client's website.

Not only this inactive brand mentions in contents can also reap a great harvest. Natural language processing and artificial intelligence are inching their way up in the whole process of indexing and ranking. This is slowly changing the paradigm which the webmasters will have to be in tandem with or leave the service.

You are not a search engine professional if you stop analysing and stop reading informative articles on this topic. Internet is constantly evolving and so are the search engines.

Sound Link Architecture

Lot many on page factors are taken into account for ranking purpose. A sound link architecture benefits not only in search engine optimization but  in the site usage. When the visitors are easily able to find what they are looking for then the site has a good architectural back bone. Most often web designers are not able to understand the importance of pages hence this should be more of a teamwork along with the owner, content writer and the seo. .

I consider site architecture as the next important step after content creation has taken place. I normally create a three tier architecture keeping the most important pages in the root directory. The second tier pages would link to a topic specific directory and another set to pages would link to directory of related topic on site. Example wildlife and birding. This way effective silos are created which helps in ranking on SERPS.

The articles will come in the third tier linked to topic specific pages only. Hence birding articles would only be linked to birding specific pages and same manner for pages covering wildlife topic.

Your website architecture should place contents in hierarchy they are meant to be in.  One need to surmise how the visitor would move through the contents. Visitors do not spend much time on the website if they have difficulty on reaching the right content.  Hence the site should have relational pages which are well linked to main page this is not well defined in sites with door way pages. The relational pages should be linked with more content which is highly relevant through web page, pdf files or doc file etc.

Some highly relevant but deep linked pages could be crossed linked if you presume that after reading this page the visitor would like to refer a related page.
