SEO Audit : Important Steps

SEO Audit whether technical or content based is a set of exercise to discover flaws in the client websites. This is usually the first step before the search engine optimization campaign begins. I usually test for

  • mobile friendliness
  • duplicate contents
  • broken URLs
  • judge the link architecture
  • URL naming
You should add the website to google search console in order to find out the crawl results. Use Fetch as tool in the console to determine how many pages are being indexed. This is tio determine the indexation status and to make sure all your important indexable pages are in the reach of major search engines especially Google.

  • server side crawl errors

    This will help in correcting technical flaws in your link architecture, coding and any other problem that is preventing proper indexation. This will also tell you about bad request

    Hosting Server

    Check for server performance the uptime. There should be no downtime due to the faults in hosting servers.  You can use the SEO Tool https://www.pingdom.com/ for this purpose. Recurring server outage is bad for your websites performance. The hosting server should also provide the right amount of
     bandwidth.

    Also check for Status Codes How a website responds to http server queries.
      
  • Meta Tag
    Check for meta tags especially check that the noindex tag if it is wrongfully placed. This can prevent indexing of your important pages hence be careful. You might wish to "nofollow" certain pages at a given time especially pages under construction or pages having similar contents.
    You might wish to "nofollow" external links on your website. You can use Screaming Frog Tool for this purpose. 
  • Add Pagination Tags

    This is important and will help reduce duplicate content penalties and low indexing.

    In large websites especially eCommerce the pages should contain Next and previous tags

    Check for XML And HTML Site Maps they should on website. Use online tools for this purpose.  You can also check these using Google Search Console.

    Check For Structured Data or snippet by viewing the page source in Head Section.

    Check for Subdomains

    Subdomains should be integrated in your campaign hence you should keep a tab of them.

    Navigation 

    Your TLN or Top Level Navigation should contain the most important pages and in case of complex eCommerce they should express hierarchy by using breadcrumbs. This is applicable to the footer as well hence always designate pages which are important enough to be linked to TLN and Footer. 

    URL Analysis
    URL should be named using keywords and should not be using underscore or comma for inner page extensions.
