SEO: Of Titles & Meta Descriptions: How To Use?

Title is the first sentence that search engine robots parse. Hence the title tag acts not only as address, suggests topics and even bring forth the brands name. Normally as per present algorithms the first few words are of great importance for search engine optimization since the search engines pick up these words and accord them high degree of importance. Thus you are more likely to rank on these search terms and if you site authority has some standing you will rank quickly.

The normal title creation technique followed in daily practice is:

Keywords - Location - Brand Name 

Well this makes common sense as mentioned in the above heading. But why not more keywords? Well that depends upon the degree of importance a location should have for a doctor or a hospital location is of great importance but for a website selling pharmaceuticals online location may not be of great importance.  Similarly if your brand is not going to make an impact you can eliminate it from the title. 

Thus if location and brand is not that important you are free to alternate it with more keywords. But remember the keyword infusion should come about naturally artificial inclusion could mean you are more likely to be penalized.

We should now understand the way search engines index a site contents. Hence exact match search terms are not required to be added any more. Understanding the keyword usage pattern has become more important than keyword analysis where in you draw a number or related terms to target in your SEO campaigns.    

Title along with meta description are your best tool to invite a click. This will lead to possibility of conversion being successful. Hence write an appealing title and meta description, the latter does not assist in ranking very much but both invite a visitor to enter your website. What more do you wish for.    

Remember Title and Meta contain information and it should be such that it answers a question about the topic straight away. Yes if your initial content provides an answer to a query your site is more likely to be visited and that is what all site owner wish for.    

In case if business or commercial websites the industry should be highlighted on the Home and About Us pages. In the inner selling pages product description should be contained in meta description and keywords. 

You can abstain from writing meta descriptions in pages of lesser importance if you wish to convey hierarchy of your pages to the search engines with emphasis. However  as best practice all meaningful pages of your site should contain meta description and keywords in the tags.  

Alternatively a well written and descriptive first paragraph is often picked up by the search engines to aptly describe a page on the SERPs.
