SEO Audit: Status Codes & Redirects

What are status codes? A server response to browsers request!

Whenever you query using a web browser you get a response from a server which is usually a web page which the search engine algorithms have indexed and ranked and the reply is a fitting acnswer to the query. In most of the web browsers you get ten answers as web page.

If  type a web page URL on the search column of the browser you will see the page if it is active. But if the page does not respond you will get a status code detailing the status recieved from the server. This is the response code or status code we are discussing here.  You will on most instance not notice the code.Redirects are placed/coded in server headers.

Types of Status Code

200 OK - Everything is all right please here is your page.

301 Redirect Moved Permenantly-   Page has moved permenantly to another location or URL. This is often used whence the URL or domain has changed and the link value of old has to be transferred to new. This is a useful redirect for SEO consultants whence dealing a change of their client website. The 301 redirect code is usually set up in the server to direct the search engine bot to new domain or Webpage. The coding differs depending upon the server type.

*Note in case the hosting server is changed than this is not applicable as the domain IP Address and Hosting Server IP Address are clubbed together.

302 Redirect Moved Temporarily- In this case the page has been temporarily for perhaps a short period of time.

401 Status Code prevents entry of the visitors and requires uername and password

403 Status Code prevents entry by all means.

404 Status Code this is a dead end code and used whence the webpage exists no more. The status is uncertain unlike in the case of 410 Status Code whence the server knows that this page is no more.

500 Internal Server Error something wrong at the server end.

503 Service Unavailable when service from server end is not available for some reason.

  • 303 – see other.
  • 307 – temporary redirect that works with HTTP/1.1.
  • 308 – that is a permanent redirect but according to another RFC.

Your online reputation on this platform is based on karmas which you build by participation in discussion, commenting and posting the right way. The topic groupings are based on categories/forums of specific or general interest by the members. These are also called subreddits.

Search Engine Optimization Failure due to Structural Faults in Websites

As a Website Owner You Should Know all This

Web designers rarely care about optimization elements in the designs. This is not totally correct for those with SEO understandings and regular touch with the SEO consultants do care about elements or attributes that would help the site in ranking and win on the social networks.  

The first element and that which is of utmost importance is of course the link architecture. Search engines index and rank a website using standard calculations of hundreds of metrics they are able to decipher or concur from the website visits time to time. The algorithms like to run through the portals in an orderly manner with ease.

Website Link Architecture

The link architecture is arrangement of pages in an orderly manner. The funnel should create a logical graph depending upon the descending scale of importance to the visitors and certified by the funnel graph as we see in the Google analytics and that of other search engines. It should lead to the right end or conclusion example contact page, booking page purchase page, etc. 

Hence the home page would be the first page that a user would often land upon in an architecture of website this is given the greatest importance in the link architecture until unless it is a doorway page.

Additional information to be added are usually on two tier in form of html pages, pdf, articles etc.  They should be linked from topical pages or extremely relevant internal pages. Linking to other websites should be avoided even if you own them especially if they are placed in same folder in the hosting space.

Website Contents

Contents to the pages are most important and pages with thin contents are not appreciated. Meaningful and relevant, the contents should be well written without any blemish. The formatting of the contents is important as well for they inform search engines about the importance of the paragraphs as well as of the relevancy. Do not include contents which are not at all related. If the contents add to greater but related information then add them in 2 tier. 

They keyword saturation is important when writing contents for the websites. Spamming is not at all appreciated and your page will be pushed lower down the rung. H 1 and H2 tags should be used frugally usually H1 is the first tag which means important content is placed highest on the hierarchy or arrangement ...naturally. Tags are used in titles and usually H1 is used only once. 
Place contents in quotes if they are suggestive of greater thought or opinion. 

Avoid duplicate contents or similar contents use canonical meta tag if similar or repeated contents have to be used. Duplicate contents copied from other websites is a sure shot failure bound.  Hire a good content writer!

Attributes

Add videos, graphics, and images which are related and use descriptive alt text without fail. Do not keyword spam here as well a warning since the temptation is great.  

The text to background contrast should be appreciable and distance between links should not create a cluster separated by appreciable distance.  

Add indexing and follow option in the meta tag without fail in each page. Leave the robot.txt file empty or add page exclusion instructions without errors.   

Add both HTML and XML site maps and regularly updated. in coding replace index.html with absolute URL on all pages. Some scripts are not properly negotiated by search engines avoid them. Make sure all the pages except those with noindex/nofollow are crawled by the search engines. 

It is wise to be in Google Search Console which will help discover discrepancies and anomaly in site performance also place Google analytical code and connect it with the search console.

Websites for tour operations face highest degree of competition. As a matter of fact most of the tour operators websites hardly receive any organic traffic...most of the response is from the referrals and recollections of the past visitors or clients.   

For such website one good means of traffic is to link it on a high traffic driven website on relevant topic. You have to pay for such link ups but then manna from the Net is driven by cost. 

A Good Tour Operator's Website

Earlier most of the contents were palmed off from other sites and it worked. Not anymore. You need a good content writer to shape up your profile, upto the mark destination descriptions, minute accommodation details, and package tours. All the write up has to be original including the itineraries of the packages.  Double check for duplicates. Use canonicalization for somewhat similar pages which you wish to retain for some purpose within the link architecture.

The search console is of immese help to quickly diagnose the site as well as to guage the performence. Hence after verification of your site the facility starts collecting data regarding various aspects of the site.

This give a sketch of performance, site pages and those with errors. You will alos find a mobileusability report with number of pages mobile compatible.

Performance

The main assessment is that of numbers of queries the site has reponded to and the clicks and impressions. The latter is how many times the site appeared on that keyword but not clicked.  You will also find out total clicks and total impressions.

Understanding Search Console Adding Property

For site owners seeking a robust response from the web it is important to understand the site functions and its performance in SERPs. This valuable information provides insight as well technical performance of the site. The webmasters appointed by site owners can hence fine tune their websites and rectify technical errors present. 

Earlier known as webmaster tool the utility is known as search console nowadays. The site owners usually connect their websmasters or search engine optimization specialists with search console so they can log and to read the insights and rectify technical error if any.

Adding Property

Organize Accounts or Followers into Twitter Lists

Twitter lists are the best way to organize your accounts/followers/tweeters using the list creating facility. This way you can categorize, organize and make lists according to your preferences.  For example you could make a list of relatives and friends each as a seperate list. You can also create a business list where in all your online business associates are bundled together. This simply means you can also make lists according to your interests, preferences and usage. 

The lists can be private (hidden) only for your use or public. The lists are for reference and for reading tweets only. You cannot send specific tweet to list members only for communication or marketing purpose.

Creating an Ad Group & Text Ad in Google Adwords

Sign in Google Adwords and create a campaign. The net step is to create an Ad Group based on a campaign you have created. 


Next name the Adgroup and then fill in the details like the default bid you will place based on your currency. The next step is to fill in the keywords in the empty panel that follows. Place broad match and exact match search terms along with exact match phrases. Also add stand alone words which combine to make popular phrases. Place one phrase or one word per  line. 

After you have created an Ad Group the nexdt step is to create an Ad. 

Creating A Text Ad
Whence you have created a campaign and added an Ad Group under it you will get an option to create an AD.

Add the Final URL correctly since this is where the Ad will land the visitor to. 

They you have an option for Headline 1 & Headline 2

Remember write a title that will attract attension as well as tempt the visitor to click. You will also get an option to describe the AD. In both instances you need to be creative and add keywords wisely. The write up should be focused and should inform about the product, services etc.  Information, features, benefits should be explicit along with appealing call to action.  Do write the call out which will further create an appeal to the visitor. This option will appear whence you have saved the Ad. At the end you will get the Ad as you have created or a compact one. Choose.

Call Only Ad

This Ad leads the visitor driectly to a moblie call. Here you have to add the location correctly and the mobile number. There is an option to target the defined location as well as customers searching for the product/services in another location.

Google Adwords - Setting A Campaign!

After creating a google account you can search for Adwords site online sign in and enter. This will lead you to an interface which Google is constantly updating. 

Google Adwords is a pay per click advertisement interface from Google and offers multitude of features ranging from creating campaigns, Ad blocks and then fine tuning the whole campign in order to get the best results. Remember Adword campaigns may be large especially that initiated by big companies...but you can set a limit and run as per your budget.  

Hence upon entering create a campaign. There is an option for creating a new campaign for starters. The new campaign panel offers option to set you Ad goal. Are you advertising for website traffic? Brand Awareness? Sales? App Promotion? For Leads? You can even set a goalless campaign. Hence depending upon the nature of your campaign you would click on the suitable panel. 

For Ads on Google.com you would choose the panel which is labeled as SEARCH. This further gives an Ad option to be visible on website, phone call, store visit or apps download.    

The Adwords features are comprehensive and require intense involvment to fine tune your campiagns but nevertheless learn more feature and youtube tutorials will help a beginner.

The ads coverage is wide and you can advertiseusing Gmail where is a link to landing page is pasted. Or the Gmal Ad itself expands with the message. You can also link the Ad with Merchant Account thus enabling product data with the campaign.

Bounce rate, speed and link architecture also determine your success on the SERP. Gone are the days when big concerns could hire a large team of web buzzers and make links using articles and directory submissions. Forums were also in this game but there the admins were more strict so the former two gamed the algorithms no end.  

I worked in an IT concern which was much into gaming the system using my articles they could make cheap copies and get massive links...it worked. But before leaving I told them it will not work in future and it did not. Similarly with directories I could write title and description which was than manipulated by the team and submitted to thousands of directories. Then this too stopped working as I had warned...but they would not listen and the site was sent to the gallows. Anchor repetition also failed. 

Link building still works, directory submission still work, forums still work but in all the cases aesthetics have changed. No spam is tolerated by any search engines. Moreover a large number of metrics have come into picture to index and rank a website on a keyword. 

Quality link building or authoritative links means a great deal of success. if your site gathers natural links nothing like that...here people link your site because they find it useful information or action wise. If your award winning company website is linked with authoritative site offering the awards on that field you have made it. This is an example.

But this will not be the case all the time hence do build links not to game the system but to get referrals. If your site follows the SE guidelines it will not be penalized since referrals lead to web saturation that is essential for websites.  

Many of the metrics are not known by the webmasters and they may never know. But aesthetics will work...always...make the website that delivers good user experience, repeat visitors will stand as testimony.

Why would any one visit a website again and again using a keyword or set of phrases regularly until unless they are finding something useful. Even one time visitor if they stay for a reasonable time and there is an action then the website has scored a point to the search engines. One time visit with good enough time spent on it and or action is there...the purpose is solved in one go.  If you understand this you will also understand the role social media plays in ranking and building an online reputation or authority....that does count.   

By some mechanism search engines are able to make out reputation or authority of the site! Domain age is certainly one of them, hosting period and hosting stability also matters. Social media performance also matters. 

Speed is something which makes a user explore the website, a slow download is a turn off...nobody wants to wait for a site to load. A reasonable good downloading time hence is a must. It need not necessarily be the fastest.

A good architecture means a quick pathway to the targeted page without crazy maneuvers. Hence good link architecture means easy access to important pages and the action page. If you observe the funnel you will discover the pathway that a visitor or visitors take to reach a particular goal. For search engines this would also mean a good directory structure...make use of silos if necessary.  A good site map and well configured robot.txt file all are important.

Contents are foremost as far as good user experience is concerned. Hire a good content writer or be one yourself. Be it website contents, blog contents, article contents, content in user generated sites all matter...  

Contents with videos, infographics and relevant images enhance user experience tremendously. Forget about search engines if your website satisfies the user criteria it will always be the winner. There are many places on Earth that do not spend a penny in advertising but are yet successful, only because of their delivery ...news travels fast.   

A responsive website is mobile friendly which is important since quick search is most of the time taking place on smartphones. Browser compatibility, platform compatibility, content size, readability , optimized graphics and images, contrast between back ground and text, all matter. 

If you can guess all that would matter regarding the user satisfaction inculcate in your design and content without hesitation. If you can be a winner without getting into the mad race of the SERPs you have made it.     

Like reputed libraries which search for a great book by a great author search engines also seek a great website by a great owner.   

Last but least there are no cheap or quick solutions, if you are a cheapster and do not have patient... hang your portal!

URL Parameters & Duplicate Contents

When you interact with a website on the Net a session is set and upon receiving the answer you will see that the returned URL has strings at the end of the absolute URL. These are dynamically generated and also inform you of action taken and these are the URL parameters. They whole set at the end of URL also denotes a session ID.

Actually the parameters are associated with various actions or tasks like tracking, reordering, categorizing, product, filtering etc. They can exhibit a page with content in multiple ways often filtered or sorted out. If you are searching for blue sweaters on an eCommerce site the action will sort out the blue sweaters from other colored ones and show you only the blue ones. In short the date source has been filtered here.   

The parameters are set in the back end process or the admin interface as per the design and desire of the exhibitor. Usually the programmer or developer will decide what dynamic tasks have to be performed for the visitors.  

URL variables start with a question mark. ?

Though the URL variables have a functional approach they can lead to a duplication issue since the search engines take the dynamic urls or urls with variables as separate. Hence same page along with the one's with the parameters is construed as duplicate content and so is the keyword or anchor text associated with it.  

Other complications may arise like the splitting of page rank. The URLs with variables make them  difficult to read, less memorable and less clickable as a consequence.  

Solution?

First you should ask the developer to restrict the use of URL with variables to ones absolutely necessary. 

You can noindex,nofollow the dynamic URLs in the meta.   

You can use the canonical tag to identify the main URL

In the robot.txt disallow the pages with string query ?

In search console you can use the parameter tool to instruct Google about the URLs with variables on your website and what to do with regarding the crawl and indexing.

If you find things difficult to comprehend you should use the option Let Google Decide. During the crawl Googlebot takes many aspects in consideration and decides one URL to value from other similar ones.

Hashtag # All About It

#hashtag is a meta data tag with a pound sign that when added to a keyword or phrase becomes a category or a topic. This leads to accumulation of data on particular social media on that particular tag. For example if you create hashtag #SEO and add it to content on say facebook it will be assimilated along all posts that are hashtagged #SEO.   

Whenever someone clicks on the #SEO has take he or she will be forwarded to a page with lot of contents, pages or links leading to that particular topic. These tags can be created on any topic especially those that are trending. For example #cricketworldcup19 a click on this tag will lead you to all information page associated with the event on FaceBook. 

In order to apply a hashtag just type a keyword and add # before it. Take care there should be no gap in between the word or phrase as  have shown on the example above. #cricketworldcup19 . 

Some of the social media on which these tags are active and searchable are Twitter, FB, Youtube and LinkedIn.  Social Media professionals must make use of this attribute but take care to use it wisely and in limitation usually one of two. Some media platforms have limited the use of this attribute to maximum thirty  or maximum 400 characters I believe.      

Webmasters use this tag in their #optimization strategy for increasing the exposure of their content but this should be strictly limited in order to avoid being labeled as spam. The attribute helps you to get assimilated in a similar category or topic. It can thus reach a target audience and hence increase exposure.

SEO: Why Sudden Traffic Fall?

Why does your rankings and subsequently the traffic fizzle down one fine day?

Also keep in reckoning the performance of your web host....has the website had a stable performance due to good hosting. Also check for malware using a good anti-malware and antivirus.

Another crucial aspect is to check for ads above the fold. In their greed clients often insert Ads above the fold which is going to invite a sure shot penalty.

Also recheck if all the aspect of the website are following the search engine guidelines I mean the current ones. This is done to be assured of penalties that the bots can subject your site to and also check for manual penalty...often Google will inform you if that has taken place. 

Check you link profile thoroughly and use Disvow tool to remove any suspected external linking.  In case of a major drop do send a reconsideration request to the admins. Keep in mind link building in the present context is driven by quality and not quantity. Cheap links are a disaster for SEO practices there is no doubt about this anymore. 

Sometimes authoritative external backlinks may go missing if the provider has placed your link in archive or simply removed it and the content associated with it...as a matter of policy. You can request reinsertion but it is better to keep building qualitative links as a SEO measure. Do not be dependent upon few links.

Check always for duplicate content and all you pages being on site. Sometime site owners having many sites can insert pages from one site to another meaning the same page is within the architecture of each site. Each page on a website should be unique the solution is very simple. 

Sometimes due to some arrangement with a vendor or an agent your site content could be placed on his or her site with the know of the webmaster. In this case if the bots construe the content on the agents/vendors site as original you are doomed. Do not place your content on another site come what may. Ask your content writer to keep busy and churn contents for placement elsewhere.       

Complacency sets in whence you begin generating high traffic for your client site. This is one step close to disaster to frequent SEO audit or check to remain stable.

Find out if major algorithm changes have been brought about by search engines. If so learn to enhance your SEO technique accordingly.

When you  are optimizing a page or a piece of content for a keyword you should definitely know what intent is that phrase going to fulfill. Whenever we are in the process of optimizing a website we make a keyword analysis and make a list after extensive research that we would use throughout the campaign. But just having a robust list is not enough...we have to know what intent does each fulfill. 

What is intent?

Well it is a common word that signifies a purpose behind an action. Similarly people use search terms on the SERPs with an intent. The search is mostly for finding information, seeking a specific website dealing with the topic the user is searching for, seeking news or intent to purchase online. 

So you may ask what is your site or rather that specific webpage you are promoting about? Does it fulfill and intent? Is it an eCommerce site or is it an information website? Hence once you are aware of this aspect you will narrow down the list of terms you   have assiduously created. In short the terms you have used to optimize the web page should be justifying what your page offering. People searching for knowledge or information should not be landing on your eCommerce page.

But it is not so simple for sometime related ages can lead to business conversion but than do you have the bandwidth to be that extensive. For example: 

You have a site on wildlife resort with a page on accommodation and one on the resort itself. Than for additional information you will also have a page on destination which is an information page and not meant for conversion. But if your destination page ranks well without putting too much time and effort all the better because user seeking information will land on the page and may move on to other important pages of the website. Well still you may not get a conversion but surely advertisement has taken place. It could create an awareness about  the property or in future.....   

But certainly you should understand the intent behind each term in your list and then give shape to your campaign. Hence optimize a page using a term that solves its purpose. Just do not go for high volume terms since they may not be fulfilling the purpose of the page. 

Also the contents should be aiming at the purpose as well. For a product page the contents should be persuasive speak about the attributes of the product or products and convert the visit into a purchase. In case if informational pages the research should be intense and the information contained should be unique and solve the visitors queries. Although the visitors understands the page offering better whence they go through the site comprehensively nevertheless on page focus should never be compromised.      

Paying attention to the intent behind each term will enable you to understand the campaign that your SEO consultant is shaping. Even when you content writer is creating pages you can instruct him the purpose of your website. Most of the clients who go for  cheap website design and development do not pay attention to this aspect and the final result is totally unproductive. 

The crux of this content is that it should be shaped accordingly to the purpose of the visitors and not search engines. Sometimes targeting prime phrases could be a futile exercise usually long term phrases act as best conversion piece or deliver on niche information about a topic.

Google My Business: Being Placed in Local Search

Google MY Business or GMB is a free tool that enables your first step in local search. When you create a Google Account you avail many of the services provided free by the search company. 

At GMB you have to fill all your information asked for including your location. Once the information has been filled up as asked for you have to verify the listing as demanded. Usually the company sends you a letter with a code to verify your listing. This letter is sent to the address you have mentioned whence filling in the Google MY Business details.   Other means of verification available for you are usually by sms or email.  

While filling in your information in title and details do add some keywords that identify your business well. Actually this tool is apt for businesses but even professions can be highlighted using GMB. The tool also offers an option to create a small site on Google do take the advantage. 

Also chose the business category carefully because you are practically doing local search engine optimization so accuracy and relevance of information will count. Also add descriptive images for better conversions since image works better than a thousands words. 

There is an option to link your posts so if you are blogging about your topic add the content URLS here. This is good way to exhibit your authority and create a reputation online.

Nitty Gritty of Technical Seo For Better Site Perfromance

Being a practitioner of content based promotion techniques, I am not a programmer or a technical person, but here I wish to inform you that technical aspects of website tuning are important. These action fine tune the website and can be executed with the help of your website programmer or designer. 

Technical SEO practices enable fine tuning of the code and scripts which may be preventing the SE robots from properly crawling and indexing the website. SEO provides solutions such that all targeted content pages are smoothly crawled and indexed by the crawlers.   

If you use the Google site operator site:xyz.com you will get a whole list of pages that have been successfully indexed by the search engine and have found a place on the SERPs.  You can discover these pages by logging in the search console as well. The pages which contain <noindex> in the meta will not be indexed and so will the pages which have been excluded in the robot.txt file. If this is by error please rectify it with immediate effect. 

Dynamic pages can sometimes use too long to respond and may not be indexed properly due to time out issues. 

For some reasons if two pages exists on a website make one canonical in order to avoid duplicate issue.

Session IDs where the server serves same content to the different persons using a changed ID where in a number is added to the URL path. This can cause a duplication problem and the page may be penalized due to confusion caused. 

This problem can also occur due to URL parameter of filtering on eCommerce Site thus producing  the same page content with a different URL.  

A wrongly placed redirect could also cause problems discuss with technical guy in your team. 

Due to some error the page not indexed could be wrongly responding with 404 code. 

Fetch As Google

If the on the search console the number of indexed pages shown does not match with total number of indexable pages in your database you have a crawling issue. Use fetch as google to ascertain the indexing.  

Making A Site Mobile Friendly 

This activity makes the site flexible enough to be show on mobile screens and the changing on link architecture including spaces between the links plausible. 

Create acceptable spaces between the links. Make the size of the font readable. Also the contrast between background and text should be appreciable.

Set up a view port in the meta which instructs browsers to resize according to the mobile screen.
